The last day of summer, or so everyone said.
It has been an incredible Indian summer, made all the more special by the fact that it ‘shouldn’t be like this’ so a gifted to us each day.
It started early, daughter number one is infatuated with a pony so she goes down to groom it while i run the dog across the stubble fields, always a great time of year to run or ride the great expanse of field opened up to roam. The weather - that warm hazy promise of another hot day more at home in a country that hosts long hot days as the norm, not here!
Homework and the frantic school morning has become less frantic as now both children know if they don't do their stuff they don’t get to do the stuff that they REALLY want to do, so mornings are a little more streamlined. With big hugs on school drop off, and off to my favourite coffee client for what is always an adventure into coffee, today it was filter coffee, I hate filter coffee it tastes of cardboard, but theirs - with just the right roasted beans, the right utensils and process - is delicious, prompting a really good brainstorm session as we work through their new brand and packaging.
Back out into the heat I sit in a trading estate next to a bursting apple tree. Why does no one from the surrounding units pick and eat these delicious ‘wild’ fruits. I eat a great wrap from Pam’s Pantry van . I never do that, followed by an apple and check my messages. It feels good.
Then to my second client of the day to present their new website designs which goes really well, I am pleased as I’m also happy with the way this website is going. I then generously get ladened up with their product for my freezer and head back to my studio briefly stopping with a possible new client who wants lettering poster design… another fun one.
It’s still boiling, doors and windows all open I get to work on sketching ideas for a new watersports logo, by 5 the kids come home and I finish early to enjoy this last day.
Off to the beach the sea is blue and so hazy you can’t see the horizon, we swim - without seeing any jelly fish today - and skim stones before heading for the best curry in town, which never disappoints and walking back along the beach it is still warm but getting dark, that exotic feel you get on continents nearer the equator. Here we associate heat with long evenings, I like that bonus feel again.. We head home to a hot bath and read of my book.
I write this to relive my perfect day, oh last day of summer, as this morning it is grey and overcast.
